Les Diablerets lies between Lake Geneva and Gstaad at an altitude of 1,200m. It’s located in the canton of Vaud, in the western French-speaking part of Switzerland. The summit is at 3,210m, making it the highest in Vaud. To the south it overlooks the hamlet and valley of Derborence and overlooks the Pas de Cheville.
In the middle Ages, the rock wall that surrounds the village was cursed, the place where the devil did his worst. Accordingly, the place name of Les Diablerets also derives from the French le Diable, which mean the devil. Luckily all of those fears can now lay to rest and in fact the opposite name has been earned. A varied, child-friendly programme of events, infrastructure and big discounts accommodate the needs of our younger guests.
Les Diablerets is a traditional farming village, and has bags of heritage. Luckily due to the lack of corporate expansion, has a very cosy feel to it and the village is charming. It has a pedestrian friendly area in the centre and in this newly lit up street you have the chance to walk around with your family or friends and discover stalls and activities such as creating snowmen, igloo building, hot chestnuts and maybe a small tipple for the older guests!
Dotted along the street are little fireplaces to warm you up and share some quality time taking in the fresh air at the centre of a typical Swiss village. Whilst you are hopping from warmth to warmth, you can take the opportunity to window shop or visit the restaurants and tea-rooms that will be nicely decorated, and to complete the atmosphere, there is a huge Christmas tree. It really does have that little Swiss chocolate box feel.
There are over 20 places where you can find very homely regional food. These fit in very well with the atmosphere of the village and although it may lack the full diversity that some larger resorts have, it can still offer the usual international dishes as well. This only maintains the quaint village feel.
This resort is not just for families however! Big events, including Snow Boarding competitions, live bands and gigs mean that Les Diablerets is for everyone – they genuinely care about all their guests.
Over 24 peaks with a height over 4,000m can be seen from the glacier. The ski run around the Oldensattel is one of the longest at 7km and most challenging runs in the area. The glacier offers a large variety of activities for its guests and has 10 lifts and 30km of ski runs. It is part of the ski area shared with Villars and Gstaad and offers 220km of ski runs. The area is great for Freestylers and Free riders. There is a challenge for any skier or snowboarder. The area includes a snow park which often holds competitions, extends up to an altitude of 3,000m.
The cross-country network consists of 30km of classical Nordic tracks and 15km of skating trails. Further facilities include a 7.2km long toboggan run, snow-shoe walks, snow biking and ice fall climbing. Last but not least, the glacier restaurant constructed by leading Swiss architect Mario Botta in the Glacier 3000 ski region offers a unique panorama of the Lake Geneva region.
