You could say that Luzern (Lucerne) is the essence of Switzerland – because the best that Switzerland has to offer comes together here. Whatever you expect from a city, Luzern is unlikely to disappoint.
Luzern offers beautiful Christmas Markets set inside the impressive hall of the railway station with 50 wooden chalets and a large Christmas tree.
Luzern is also very close to the beautiful Mount Pilatus & Rigi along with the famous ski resort of Engelberg so you can pop up for a bit of skiing too!
Luzern offers a lovely market, set in the impressive building of the rail station, so the cosy stalls offer warmth and exude charm. On certain dates there is an outdoor International Market too for flavours from other countries.
Linked with Zurich Market, less than 50mins away by train, you can sample the excellence of both markets and stay in one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland.
Complete with gable paintings the medieval Chapel Bridge forms the centrepiece of Luzern’s townscape and is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. A further landmark of the town is the Museggmauer, a wall which, with the exception only of one of its towers, has been preserved in its original, well-fortified state.
Luzern is made up of historic decorated houses lining the picturesque squares and churches within the car-free old city. The Jesuit church dating from the 17th century is regarded as Switzerland’s first sacral Baroque building and the twin towers of the Hofkirche form an integral part of the townscape. The figure of a dying lion which was hewn from the face of rock in remembrance of the heroic death of the Swiss guards killed during an attack on the Tuileries in 1792 is world famous.
Tradition and modernity stand side-by-side with ease in Luzern, as the town has also earned a reputation for itself with innovative design. The futuristic Culture and Convention Centre (KKL), designed by leading French architect Jean Nouvel, is one the architectural highlights of the town. The KKL is also a landmark of Luzern Festival City and venue for a wide variety of cultural events throughout the year.
