Riederalp is in the heart of the amazing Aletsch Arena area along with Bettmeralp and Eggishorn, in the famous Valais region of Switzerland with easy access from Geneva, Zurich & Basel. With 104kms of pistes from 1925m to 2869m and stunning views across the UNESCO Aletsch Glacier, a great ski area ideal for beginners up to advanced.
From December to the end of April, snow sports enthusiasts can indulge their passion to their hearts’ content; snow is guaranteed. Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp are linked by 104 kilometers (75 miles) of ex-quisitely groomed pistes, including beginners’ slopes, snow parks, half-pipes and free-ride pistes as well. And the best part is: carrying your skis is a no-no. In the Aletsch Arena, you step out of your front door straight onto the ski slopes.
Riederalp is a car free resort, meaning all fuel vehicles are parked at the car park at Mörel (below Riederalp) and then leaving you relaxed and free to wander across the whole resort. It also means the air is very clean and the atmosphere is very quiet. The village is very picturesque and still holds a lot of the charm you would expect from a Swiss hamlet. The main street runs through the centre of the village and is still decorated with the classic cobblestones. All your amenities are based around this centre and strolling outside of this centre takes you into the outskirts of the town, where there are traditional building with gardens and a lot of space, somewhat of a rarity in many of the ski resorts.
Here, on the sunny plateau located high above the Rhone Valley between 1,845 and 2,869 meters (6,053-9,412 feet) above sea level, you’ll find that true winter still exists. Your taste buds are in for a treat here in Riederalp, with a good selection of restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisine ranging from hearty Swiss and Valais specialities served in very quaint cafés offering good honest food to fine gourmet cuisine from Europe and around the world. For those after a quick bite between the bars there are the Alpine standard, of pizzerias, offering cheap, quick but very good pizzas.
Riederalp has a nice après ski scene. There are plenty of bars based in the village (as it is ski in, ski out) to help you ease into the evening. Once that has happened, the little streets become alive and bars will take the evening into night. There are quiet little bars and restaurants to relax in and enjoy the mountains and stunning views. Also family orientated, there are plenty of choices for kids too.
Aletsch Arena Lifts
All skiers and snowboarders of all levels will find something in the Aletsch Arena to suit their needs. With a goodly number of pistes ranging up to 2,869m you can always be sure of snow. Most of the lower slopes down from the snow sure glacier are serviced by snow cannons, ensuring that the descent down into the village is covered in snow right up until the end of the season in late April.
The Aletsch Arena is recognised as one of Switzerland’s more family friendly ski resorts with lots of flat sunny slopes for beginners and plenty of supervised activities for children. There are great off-piste opportunities in the region and for the adventurous ones, a short hike can lead to some amazing descents.
The Aletsch Area offers 35 lifts, the vast majority of which are chairlifts and gondolas. The ski pistes are split up into beginners’ slopes, snow parks, half-pipes and floodlit night runs as well. Those who are looking for bigger challenges can get their adrenalin rush on the three free-rider pistes in Fiescheralp. So it really is split up very nicely to suit everyone.
