From its sunny plateau, Verbier offers some amazing views. In the shadow of Mont Blanc and the Grand Combin, it is located at the heart of one of the biggest ski areas in the Alps: Les 4 Vallées. A free riding paradise, Verbier is the perfect winter sports destination, from the very first snow fall. And when the snow melts, Verbier turns into a paradise for mountain bikers!
The resort offers a wide range of accommodation in a protected setting, with all the charm of a traditional village and its wooden chalets. An international programme of events will add a whole new dimension to your stay. It caters for all tastes, from action-packed holidays to relaxation, not forgetting shopping. Après is an institution here and you will be spoiled for choice of places to end your day in the mountains. Fine dining enthusiasts can choose from a wide range of options, including award-winning restaurants.
Verbier is one of the largest holiday resort and ski areas in the Swiss Alps, and is recognized as one of the premiere off-piste locations in the world. Many top skiers have settled in the Verbier area in order to take advantage of the steep slopes, varied conditions and resort culture. They run the Verbier Extreme competition here where pro skiers tackle their way down, what looks to be a cliff face, points being given on speed and choice of line.
The village is predominantly made up of chalets and claim to offer over 25,000 opportunities for overnight stays. The village is set up around a few small roundabouts and branches out from them. All the main shops, bars and restaurants are based around this area. As defined by the skiing, it is a fairly young resort and all the shops stock the latest freeride gear and brightest clothing. The resort isn’t short of money either and a few well know celebrities own places here and holiday in the resort.
It is a very lively resort and known for bringing in the Nuevo rich clientele. This gives the village a very cosmopolitan feel and has a wide range of choices for food. There is pretty much a restaurant from every main food type, and within that is a range of prices and quality. This means a small walk around and you will almost certainly find something to suit your taste buds.
The après-ski nightlife is pretty happening in Verbier. In early evening the pubs and bars are jammed with skiers discussing the crazy lines they have skied. Many of the bars do a happy hour, which is normally between the times of 4–6pm. So if you know the right bars you can double the rewards. If the crazy happy hour scene isn’t for you then there are plenty of boutique style wine bars that are a lot quieter and offer a warmer feeling. Later on into the evening there are a few nightclubs that will keep you going into the early hours.
As soon as the first snow falls, Verbier becomes a winter sports paradise. Based in the 4 Vallées’ area, is the name of the immense ski resort with a good 415km of piste and more than 90 lifts and railways linking the stations of Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz. The Medran lift takes you up into the resort area and opens up the top of Mont Fort at a height of 3,330m. From here there is a fantastic view to the Matterhorn, Grand Combin and Mont Blanc.
The average standard of skiing here is high. Many freestyle and freeride skiers come from all over the world to ride here, off the top of the Mont Fort lifts. The amount of snow they have in Verbier is very extensive here and the natural terrain makes it perfect for pushing the limits. There, however is no need to feel outclassed, whatever your level, there is over 415km of pistes to use for people of all levels. Verbier’s name has come from the off-piste scene and very often covers up the vast amount of mixed piste skiing there is.
You can also enjoy the winter landscape without skis along the snowshoe and winter hiking trails or on two 10km long toboggan pistes. For those who love major ski tours, Verbier is well known as a starting point and staging post in the so-called ‘Haute Route’ to Zermatt and Saas-Fee.
