The holiday resort of Lenk lies at the end of the Simmen valley in a wide opening. The Wildstrubel massif forms one of the most beautiful valley endings in the Alps, and the perfect setting for the varied Bernese Oberland walking and winter sports paradise with its many natural attractions.
Lenk is composed of two German words that mean long nook, and that’s exactly the shape and function the town has at the top of the long, Simme River valley. Nestled up against the Wilstrubel’s steep face, the locals simply state that they are in the nook (an der Lenk)!
Lenk, at an altitude of 1,068m, is one the Swiss holiday resorts that has been awarded the Families Welcome quality mark and offers a wide and varied programme of children’s activities.
If it wasn’t framed by the Alps, Lenk would be a simple, small and rustic farming village in the Swiss countryside. The village is nice, small and the main area is just a few cobbled streets that can be walked in ski boots and is worth taking time to explore because it’s so quaint. There are horse pulled sleighs that will take you through this small town, a thick blanket wrapped around their waists and legs to keep them warm and cosy. It really is the place you think of when someone asks you to picture a Swiss ski village.
Lenk can offer a lively nightlife with a good choice of nightclubs and bars and an informal, fun atmosphere. There are discotheques that favour younger people while the Taverns appeals to all ages.
Typical Swiss Raclettes and fondues are available in nearly all the restaurants and for something a little different to the traditional there are a lot of Italian restaurants, specialising in good pizzas! In some Tavern bars there are live bands and some of the restaurants have traditional Swiss music.
The villages of Lenk and Adelboden are located in two different valleys and are thus closely connected only by pistes. The main network of lifts are accessed from the Rothenbach Cable car and up into the Adelboden-Lenk ski area.
The area is split in 5 mini areas all connected by a first class lift system making this one of the largest and most attractive ski areas in Switzerland. You’ll find over 170km of slopes fed by over 55 lifts. Starting at an altitude of 1,053m and going up to 2,375m, the slopes are predominantly north-facing and therefore ensure good snow coverage throughout the season.
Good nursery slopes can be found in the village, taking the Mauren lift up, whilst the Hahnenmoos area provides a wider area for the better skiers. Adelboden is ideal for intermediates, as a large proportion of the skiing area can be explored by red runs. The skiing is divided into five sectors, including Geils, which offers long, traversing runs across the mountains. There are a few black runs down from the Geils area and some off piste trails leading back down to Adelboden and Lenk as well as the FIS Ski World Cup Adelboden-Piste at Chuenisbärgli. Only big names like Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark and Austria’s Hermann Maier have made it onto the medals podium here.
