Nendaz lies on a sunny terrace above the Rhône Valley near Sion, the capital of the Valais. In winter it has everything a winter sports enthusiast could want, being at the heart of the 4 Vallées ski region. And in summer, whether it be through the forest, across the pastures, along a bisse or on the summits, the choice is yours to make among over thirty hiking trails. The terrace stretches from 1,300m to 1,400m in altitude and offers fantastic views of the Bernese, Valais and Vaud Alps.
A modern holiday resort has grown up all around the centre of this delightful old Valais village with its traditional timber houses, barns and grain stores. Siviez is 8kms to the south in the Nendaz valley and also belongs to this community. It is sometimes also called ‘Super Nendaz’ and cable cars run from here to the great peak and skiing area of Mont Fort, at 3,330m the highest peak of the 4 Vallées ski resort.
Nendaz is a fairly large village and is made up of mainly chalets, small hotels and apartments. The main streets lead off the roundabout next to the tourist office which is topped with a traditional gondola. Although cars are allowed in the villages, all the amenities are off the main streets and a brief 10 minute walk will see you the whole length of the main street. There are buses that can transport you to Siviez but the main gondola is at the top of the main street and you can ski over into Siviez from there.
The town is a lively place and is the home to many people who love the 4 Vallées ski area. Unlike Verbier, Nendaz is grounded and offers a more honest ski resort scene. The food, bars and shops are still normally priced and the whole atmosphere is more about people there to enjoy the mountains and snow and not about how much money you have and what you do with it.
The true charm of the area is based in the old part of vilage which is a little further down the hill and started as a farming community. There are still the traditional cowsheds and Stadels you can visit and take in the heritage of this group of villages.
All the restaurants are based off the main road and there is a huge choice all within 500m of each other. There are the obvious Swiss classics, all reasonably priced, and there is also a huge range of international foods on offer. Transport to the restaurants is very easy so they all stock fresh products and serve a very high standard of cuisine.
The nightlife in Nendaz is a lively scene. There are plenty of bars squeezed in between all the restaurants and also a couple of nightclubs. The restaurants all stay open late, so if you just fancy a quiet drink in the evening then that is also very possible. There is something for everyone in Nendaz.
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as you explore the natural wonders that surround this charming alpine town. With a over 250km of well-marked hiking trails suitable for all levels, Nendaz offers something for everyone.
