Andermatt is located in the heart of the Gotthard holiday region. It offers a variety of sports, excursions and recreational opportunities. The Urserntal valley becomes a huge ski area. Pleasant hotels and apartments will make you feel at home during your stay. They have everything you need for an unforgettable stay. In the middle of this breathtaking Alpine scenery, you will easily escape the busy daily life, begin to relax and have a great time.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe declared it *the dearest and most interesting place to me*. The Ursern valley at the foot of the Gotthard Pass is one of the most impressive valleys in Switzerland. Andermatt lies at 1,436m, the largest of the three villages in the valley and is at the crossroads of the mountain passes from north to south and from east to west.
The main village is full of original traditional Swiss features and is still very compact and full of heritage. It’s a fantastic resort for the old-school skiers who love the jump turns in the back country. The streets still have cobble stones running through them and quaint little cafes and bars tight up to the roadside. The skiing is challenging and fantastic for off piste and ski touring alike, even the Swiss Army train here.
The resort however, now sits on the cusp between life as a famous, under-developed centre, and a new billion dollar development that will be the largest of its kind in the Alps, and transform the village into one of Europe’s and the world’s top destinations. The picturesque village itself still remains as all the new facilities are built on a new side of the town, therefore preserving the heritage, while giving the ski area a massive boost.
There are plenty of places to eat in Andermatt. Most of them are hotel restaurants serving traditional Alpine cuisine which is both good value and of a good standard. If you fancy a little change from the Swiss, there are plenty of diverse restaurants that serve all the usual worldly varieties, including good Italian that is cooked the real way pizzas on a wood fire oven, also meat and fish dishes cooked on open charcoal grills.
Andermatt has small mountain restaurants spread across the different areas. As like the restaurants in the village the food is normally good and the prices are very reasonable. The village also includes restaurants in the beginner’s area which have a terrace for sunny days are perfect for the first time skiers.
Andermatt is one of the best winter sports centres in Switzerland for guaranteed snow. A cable-car takes skiers and snowboarders in two stages up to the skiing area on the Gemsstock, at nearly 3,000m. The wide open slopes are ideal for experienced skiers, snowboarders and fans of deep powder. There are easier slopes near the Gurschenalp and in the skiing areas of Nätschen and Winterhorn. With the winter sports pass for the Gotthard-Oberalp region, you can also use the ski area of Sedrun.
There is also a 40km cross-country track and goes along the River Reuss through fantastic scenery from Andermatt via Hospental to Realp and back. A spectacular panoramic view of more than 600 summits makes your heart beat faster. The famous ski run of Bernhard-Russi runs down the glacier and got its name in honour of the winner of the Olympic Games in Sapporo. The Gemsstock has long been a secret amongst snowboarders and off-piste skiers and is occasionally the scene of a series of exciting events.
The ski area offers a wide range of pistes for every standard. Beginners to free riders will find something exciting in the Gotthard area. Around 45km of the runs are covered with snow cannons.
There is around 40km of black runs, 60km of Red runs, and 30km of Red runs.
