The tradition-rich Grisons holiday resort of Arosa is located at the end of the romantic Schanfigg Valley at an altitude of about 1800 metres above sea level. The imposing mountain landscape with its many peaks offers a wide variety of winter sports and all the enjoyment that comes with them.
Because of its location at the bottom of a wide valley, Arosa is very sunny and also heavily sheltered from strong alpine winds. As there is no transit traffic this means the air is particularly pure and this gives Arosa the title of a famous Alpine health resort since 1877.
Arosa had its first known settlements in the 13th century. After 1300 Arosa German-speaking Walser settlers came from Davos and replaced the original Romansh-speaking inhabitants. During the following centuries, the village had a very big alpine pasture economy. Due to this, Arosa itself is very spread out, it still has a nice open and still agricultural feel. The slopes can be accessed from a few different places and a great bus service links the resort together. Traditional chalet buildings, especially in the centre of Arosa, are mixed with in with a few larger hotels offering great value and also make it an appealing place to visit.
With over 70 places to eat, the choice of restaurants in Arosa is endless. Many restaurants offer very high standards, these include Gault Millau listed gourmet restaurants in the least expected locations. The options of food types are large too. Obviously there are the usual Swiss Alpine specialities, but beyond that you’ll find French, Italian and even Japanese, Mexican and Thai options.
Great mountain restaurants are dotted around the Arosa slopes. They are all large, serve good honest food and have a traditional farming feel. All of them have big sun terraces, where you can enjoy the amazing views and catch some rays. To top it all off most of the traditional mountain cuisine is made with local ingredients and home cooked to a high standard.
For skiers and snowboarders there are 70 kilometres of groomed pistes as well as a 30km free ride area and a half-pipe. 13 transport facilities take passengers to altitudes of up to 2,653m above sea level. Some of the 60km of winter walking trails take you right into the snow sports region which means that winter walkers can take advantage of the cosy huts and meet up with their relatives and friends who are indulging in sports on the slopes. There are attractive routes for snow-shoe trekkers and toboggan riders too. At the snow sports schools of the Arosa Junior Club children learn to ski and ride snowboards in a fun way, while experiencing an imaginative holiday at the same time.
The ski area has 225kms of pistes!
