With 220km of pistes stretching across over 100 square kms of snow-assured slopes around the Crap Sogn Graubünden area are the ski villages of the Flims, Laax and Falera. They make up one of Switzerland’s very large, connected winter sports regions. The 3 are best known under the umbrella name of LAAX.
LAAX is more than just a resort. It can offer Europe’s largest half pipe, a massive, 4 snow parks and the first indoor freestyle hall, the freestyle Academy. This is considered Europe’s leading freestyle playgrounds, and each year holds the World Snowboarding Championships.
Flims, Laax and Falera in the Rhaeto-Romanic linguistic and cultural region of the Surselva (anterior Rhine valley) in the canton of Graubünden is situated on a sunny plateau, high above the Rhine gorge. Each of the three villages has specialised in a particular clientèle.
Flims offers a large network of hiking and cross-country skiing trails for walkers, winter hikers and cross-country skiers, as well as numerous wellness hotels. In the past, Flims dairymen delivered their milk to a dairy store in town from which villagers collected their raw or pasteurized milk daily. The location of the store is now being used as the tourist information centre and the milk is being treated elsewhere. The small, quiet village has grown from this and a dairy background is still very present in the village.
Falera is mostly overshadowed by the other two villages, but this is a good thing and means Falera has preserved the charm of a Graubünden mountain village. This and the quiet, sunny location make it an ideal village for relaxing family holidays.
Laax in particular attracts the cool kids. Snowboarders from throughout the world come to the lively village and its surrounding pistes and parks.
There are nearly 100 places to eat spread between the three villages. More than half of them are based in Flims. You will find a massive range starting at the fast food stage and moving right up to gourmet. The choice in Laax is more limited but still manages to serve up a range that would rival any normal city.
It has an unusual reputation for offering some of the liveliest après boarding in the Alps! Both Laax and Flims have a good selection of bars on the lower slopes. Laax has the livelier name due to its freestyle background whereas Flims offers a quieter, more Swiss nightlife.
The ski region of Flims, Laax and Falera is vast and includes pistes of all difficulties. The highest point in the ski region, the Vorab glacier is 3,018m. The ski area has some great pistes, including over 65km of blue runs, over 70km of red runs, over 45km of black runs and 70% of pistes are above 2,000m! The transport is modern and is comprised of over 27 lifts transporting over 40,500 skiers an hour. Thanks to the professional Snowboard Freestyle Academy and a host of different snowboarding events, special freeride areas have been reserved for snowboarders. There are 4 huge parks and this holiday destination has become the Mecca for snowboarders. The countless après-ski activities, parties, bars, concerts and innovative hotels serve to attract many younger guests to the region around LAAX.
There is a snow park suitable for all beginners who want to find their way around rails, boxes and kickers, as well as easy jibbing. This snow park features 5 kickers and 10 obstacles over a distance of 300m.
The next park is for experienced boarders and freeskiers who can put their limits to the test and perfect their style in the ILS Plauns snow park. This snow park features 5 kickers and 15 obstacles over a distance of 550m.
In the NoName, (yes, NoName) snow park, you can drop into Europe’s largest half pipe and then enjoy chilled-out music and a good ambience as you watch other riders from Café NoName. The park is 350m in length, with 2 kickers and 6 obstacles.
The Curnius Park, offers freestyle fun for all levels. There are plenty of rails, obstacles and boxes at different levels of difficulty along the entire length of the slope. It’s 1,000m and has 2 kickers and 25 obstacles.
Freestyle aside, LAAX has made it easy for families to enjoy exciting yet relaxing holidays. Whilst your children have fun learning to ski in the Snow Wonderland, the freestyle generation can discover the snow parks. Beginners and skiing connoisseurs will be in their element on the wide slopes of a resort with one of the highest guarantees of snow in Europe.
In addition to Alpine skiing and snowboarding, guests with a passion for sports can enjoy cross-country skiing, curling, winter hiking and paragliding.
