Grimentz is in the amazing Val d’Anniviers and offers 220kms of skiing to 3025m, all on one pass.
Grimentz is the largest and most popular resort in Val d’Anniviers. A good variety of skiing is on offer at Grimentz for all abilities, with 2 new chairs, mostly above the tree-line. Grimentz is relatively high and snow-sure. The vertical drop at Grimentz is over 1400m. The new cable car linking Grimentz with Zinal makes this the largest connected ski area in Val d’Anniviers.
Grimentz lies at an altitude of 1570m. It is a veritable picture-book village, famous for its granaries, which have been nearly burnt black by the sun and the innumerable fiery red geraniums in the window boxes.
The Grimentz ski slopes above Bendolla stretch along the Becs de Bosson up to an altitude of almost 3000m, affording stunning views over the Val d’Anniviers and Rhone Valley. Other attractions include a fun park, tours, cross-country ski trails, a toboggan run and winter hiking trails.
Grimentz is one of five unspoiled old villages in the Val d’Anniviers, above the valley town of Sierre. The village of cute wooden buildings and narrow streets spreads up a steep slope, with newer (but tasteful) development taking shape around the tiny centre. The slopes are delightfully uncrowded, offer varied intermediate cruising and have a good snow record. And the resort has a richly deserved reputation for its extensive off-piste. Buses serve the other main ski areas in the valley, except the new cable car linking Grimentz to the Zinal ski area.
The picturesque Valaisian village of Grimentz belongs to the municipality of Anniviers in the eponymous valley. A tour of the village reveals all of its charms. The Burgher House from 1550 forms the center of the village. By the way, a white glacier wine ripens in old larch wood barrels in the cellar of the burgher house – this wine is a specialty of the erstwhile nomadic farmers.
Grimentz Mountain Restaurants: for great pasta head to Orzival by the terrain park or for more traditional treats the rustic Etable du Marais is very atmospheric. The functional main restaurant near the top of the gondola is mainly self-service and has a lovely terrace overlooking the ski chalets. Grimentz itself has a fantastic creperie in the middle of the village called Claire Fontaine where you can get a seriously tasty salade verte. The other option is Gite du lac de Moiry which has a great terrace to sit and relax on a sunny day and has a good variety of dishes on its menu.
Be sure to stop by Snow Bar Chez Florioz piste side bar for an apres-ski sharpener before heading back to your accommodation. Grimentz village also has a lively sports bar, Bar le Country, where you can catch the big games over a nice cold beer.
Although Grimentz has plenty of rough-hewn rustic charm there is still the possibility to venture out of your chalet or hotel. Grimentz Disco Shadock has a cool ambiance with darts and bar games and is open until 4am, whilst Pub Domino has a more youthful atmosphere and is open till 1am in the morning.
As many of the properties in Grimentz are self-catered you may rather not spend every evening slaving over a hot stove and eating in the chalets. Grimentz has a good Pizzeria located in the heart of the village, the Arlequin. Don’t forget the creperie of Claire Fontaine which is perfect for family eating at reasonable prices.
The skiing, especially if you are into off-piste, is epic. With the top station at just under 3,000 metres and over 1,400 metres of vertical there is plenty of everything, and the North and East facing slopes keep their snow in good condition. What’s more the back-country terrain hardly ever gets tracked out so you can repeat descents all day long with fresh tracks each time.
Thanks to the high altitude lake above the village Grimentz has an unlimited and high pressure water supply. This means the village has been able to install fantastic snow making facilities that keep the lower slopes in great condition throughout the season.
The slopes in Grimentz are comprised of 15kms of blue runs, 41kms of red runs and 17kms of black runs. You have a huge area of off-piste skiing and your pass covers you for the full Val d’Anniviers ski area – 220kms of pistes!
